Introduction

Halal Certification in Malaysia is the only Halal logo which is both government-sponsored and universally-recognized among Islamic countries. Global Halal markets recognize this certification for its long-standing history and authority. Typical marketplace discussions of Halal standards focus on food items but, in reality, the products involving Halal certification extend much further. If Taiwanese products can obtain Halal Certification, it will not only attract Muslim tourists to vacation in Taiwan but will also enable export of these products to countries with Halal markets. This will create massive business opportunities for the Taiwanese tourist, restaurant, hotel, food, make-up product, medical product, health product, etc. industries.

Currently, the proportion of Halal-Certified products remains rather low. To take the hospitality industry for example, only 1.58% of domestic hotels have completed Halal Certification, with the number reaching only 0.05% for restaurants. Furthermore, the percentage of produce and poultry meeting Halal Certification standards is less than 3%. The aforementioned numbers indicate that there remains room for growth in the Halal-Certified market for our national products and services. A complete Halal-Certified industrial chain includes obtaining certification for raw materials, production, manufacture, distribution, storage, and other steps in the process. If companies want to ensure the entire supply chain meets the requirements of Halal Certification, they need professional consultation. Yet we still currently lack domestic Halal Certification professionals.

Therefore, the ASEAN and South Asia Research Center organized a Halal Certification Consultant Education and Training on 2017/10/19-20. The training included introducing the concept and process of Halal Certification and, according to the professional ability of each participant, provided relevant courses on Halal taxes and laws, e-commerce and trade routes, and sales and management, in hopes both that the participants would become professional Halal Certification consultants in the future and to train those already working at the companies in need of Halal Certification to meet their own Halal Certification needs.
